Job Description Summary

WVNCC seeks applicants for Student Success Coach - DHHR/TANF based on the Wheeling campus.

Provide guidance, success coaching and assistance to students and prospective students in the Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program throughout the college's admissions process, onboarding, and enrollment with the College. The Success Coach works with students to improve retention, remove obstacles and barriers, ensure success and complete their program.

The Student Success Coach is a professional position responsible for student retention, success and completion. Thjis work can also include outreach to various public venues including, for example, high schools or college fairs to provide information to potential students to motivate them to apply to the institution. Additional responsibilities may include assisting in recruitment efforts by giving input to admissions public relations campaigns. Job responsibilities require the ability to exercise critical human relations skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with college faculty, staff, administration, students, and members of the community and the public. Work is performed under general direction, working from established policies and objectives. Problems are faced in this position are varied and complex, which may require novel and creative approaches to resolution. New concepts and approaches may have to be developed. The Student Success Coach exercises judgment in prioritizing, planning, and organizing work within time, process, and results requirements; has some flexibility to modify workflow based on need and circumstances. Decisions contribute the overall strategy and direction of the division/entire institution and errors could easily result in major costs, problems, and disruptions within the affected area.

Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to


  • Work with students and prospective students and assist in gathering the necessary information they need to make an informed decision about the institution and navigating the various processes, paperwork and offices to enroll and to succeed at the institution.
  • Advise students and parents regarding the admissions process and financial aid application process including assisting with FAFSA information.
  • Work closely with DHHR personnel. Communicate regularly with the DHHR offices. Assist participant in coordination with DHHR case workers and management.
  • Meet with TANF recipients, both on campus and off campus, to identify and alleviate barriers to student success and completion.
  • Work with appropriate advisors (Student program advisor or faculty advisor) to determine courses and schedule needed.
  • Provide identified students with information regarding the availability of support programs and provide appropriate career services direction to determine appropriate program of study. Monitor academic progress and financial aid standards of progress
  • Coordinate with the Special Populations counselor and coordinate needed paperwork with the student and DHHR as needed. Successfully progress through program of study to graduation
  • Additional miscellaneous responsibilities:
    • Be knowledgeable of school policies
    • Be able to understand the interdependence of other areas of the college such as billing, admissions, financial aid, and registration and work collaboratively with those areas to resolve student issues
  • Travel among college campuses as needed to meet with participants in the TANF program, DHHR representatives, and Northern personnel. Travel to meetings within the state may be required.
  • Design and teach classes in transitional studies, college preparation and college success, as identified by assessment of TANF participant's academic needs.
  • Organize and/or conduct workshops including stress management, time management, study skills, and other topics related to overall student success.
  • Conduct workshops and attend orientation at the DHHR office and with the DHHR programming schedule.
  • Maintain participant records and prepare reports.
  • Performs other functions as required or assigned. Also complies with all Policies and Standards.
