Misericordia University’s College of Business is accepting applications, effective immediately, for a full-time Tax Attorney/Tax Specialist position in our newly created Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic.
The mission of Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITC), is to ensure the fairness and integrity of the tax system for taxpayers who are low-income or speak English as a second language by 1) providing free representation on their behalf in tax disputes with the IRS; 2) advancing outreach and educating them about their rights and responsibilities as taxpayers, and 3) identifying and advocating on a systemic basis issues that impact these taxpayers. The clinic is funded in part by a grant from the Office of the Taxpayer Advocate of the Internal Revenue Service. The Misericordia University LITC is located in Dallas, PA, and serves a nine-county area in Northeastern, PA, with an aggregate population of one million residents. The tax attorney/tax specialist position will assist the Clinic Director of the LITC with all aspects of the Tax Clinic, including client representation, student and volunteer supervision, classroom instruction, community outreach and education, and systemic advocacy for issues impacting taxpayers of the LITC. The tax attorney/tax specialist will provide direct representation for clients before the Internal Revenue Service, the United States Tax Court (where applicable and authorized), and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The tax attorney/tax specialist will also provide business students with practical training in federal tax law, IRS regulations and procedures, and skills and experience in representing clients before the IRS and other tribunals. The position is subject to continued IRS grant funding.
Qualified applicants will have either 1) a Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school, and a valid license to practice law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or eligibility for such admission; or 2) a valid license to practice as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or eligibility for such admission; or 3) be credentialed as an IRS enrolled agent. Completion of a graduate degree is preferred for applicants qualifying as a CPA or Enrolled Agent. Qualified applicants will have sufficient tax law expertise to oversee substantive and procedural tax matters, and will have excellent analytical, research, and writing skills. Qualified applicants will have experience or capacity for instructing students and volunteers in providing clinical tax services. Successful applicants also must have an interest in serving communities of low income or where English is a second language, and will have experience or enthusiasm in developing collaborations with community partners. Fluency or strong proficiency in Spanish or another second language is preferred.
