The Office of the Kansas Attorney Genera l (OAG) is accepting applications to fill an Investigator position in our Public Protection Division. This position is NOT a law enforcement position; this position conducts civil investigations only.

PRIMARY DUTIES
  • Investigate consumer complaints to assist in determining possible violations of the Kansas Consumer Protection Act (KCPA), the No-Call Act, the Charitable Organization and Solicitations Act, the Kansas False Claims Act, the Funeral and Cemetery Merchandise Agreements Act, the Kansas Cemetery Corporation Act, the Wayne Owen Act (identity theft), and related consumer protection laws.
  • Procure, analyze and interpret computerized data, financial records, medical records, investigative records, legal documents, federal and state laws, regulations, policies and other material in the pursuit of evidence of violation of consumer protection laws.
  • Review consumer complaints to determine scope of investigation; collect and analyze documents, statements, and evidence related to complaints obtained from consumers and suppliers.
  • Communicate with consumers and business representatives by letter, email and telephone; consult and work with assistant, first assistant, and deputy attorneys general; draft letters, subpoenas, and other documents for review and approval by attorneys; prepare written reports, correspondence, memoranda and other documents.
  • Work alongside Deputy, First Assistant, and Assistant Attorneys General in developing cases for administrative action or civil trials. Testify as an investigative witness in administrative and/or court proceedings resulting from investigations.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary efforts. Coordinate investigations and work with appropriate state and federal agencies. Gather data for and assist in preparing reports for the Legislative Budget Committee and the Kansas Legislature. Perform duties to meet statutory requirements as set forth in K.S.A. 75-723.
  • Accepts telephone calls and walk-in visits from consumers making complaints or seeking information. Responds to inquiries from consumers and provides appropriate guidance and/or referral.
  • Participates in consumer education and public outreach activities, such as the Kansas State Fair and public presentations to consumer groups, schools, business associations and community organizations.

TRAVEL
The primary work location for this position is at 120 SW 10th Street, Topeka, Kansas. The individual appointed to this position is expected to travel to the locations required to competently and diligently discharge the assigned duties. Occasional in-state travel is required. A valid driver's license is required when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience in general office, clerical and administrative work. Education in criminal justice or social work may be substituted for experience, as deemed by the Attorney General to be sufficient qualification to perform the assigned work.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Word and Excel applications required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • College coursework in criminal justice or social work preferred.
