Job Description and Duties

Under direction of the Chief of Enforcement and Licensing, the Supervising Special Investigator I directs a staff of Investigators in the performance of field investigations to detect or verify suspected violations of laws, rules, or regulations; assists a superior in planning and directing a major investigation program, and may act for him/her in his/her absence.

Applicants must have successfully completed a P.O.S.T. Peace Officer Basic Training Academy or Specialized Investigators’ Basic Academy. The applicant’s status with P.O.S.T. must be current.

Applicants must meet California Peace Officer hiring, physical, psychological, and background standards before a hire can be made.

Working Conditions

  • The position works primarily in Pleasanton ( Alameda County) in a typical racetrack environment.
  • The position is required to work periodically at other California racetracks, fairs, and training facilities.
  • Lodging and per diem is provided by the department.
  • The position is required to work irregular hours, holidays, and weekends.
  • The position is required to travel occasionally throughout the State.
  • The position is not eligible for telework.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a Background Investigation be cleared prior to being hired.
  • The position(s) require(s) Medical Clearance prior to being hired.
  • The position(s) require(s) Psychological Evaluation clearance prior to being hired.


Applicants must possess a current State of California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced Certificate. You will be required to provide a copy of your certificate prior to appointment.


In accordance with California Government Code, Section 1031, the employee shall meet the following minimum standards:

  1. Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Any permanent resident alien shall be disqualified from holding a position if his or her application for citizenship is denied.
  2. Be at least 18 years of age.
  3. Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal records.
  4. Be found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer. For purposes of this section a medical examination, including psychological screen, shall be required prior to appointment.
