Position: Police Officer
The City of St. Marys, Ohio, is currently seeking candidates for the position of Police Officer. Interested applicants must complete the NTN testing and submit their scores to the City of St. Marys by October 11, 2024. Late submissions will not be considered for this testing period. The Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) must also be completed by this deadline.
In addition to completing the NTN testing, applicants must submit a completed Civil Service Application along with all required documentation. Applications should be submitted to Sue Backs, at 101 E. Spring Street, St. Marys, OH 45885, by October 11, 2024. Civil Service Applications can be found on the City's website.
Additional Credit Opportunities:
Candidates who pass all individual tests (excluding additional credits) may qualify for extra credit, as described below. This additional credit can increase a candidate's total examination grade by up to 20%. The credits are awarded for the following:
Veteran's Credit:
An applicant who has completed service in the uniformed services and was honorably discharged or transferred to reserve duty may receive a credit of 20% of the total examination grade, provided they file the necessary documentation and meet the qualifications.
Reserve Component Credit:
An applicant in good standing with a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces, including the Ohio National Guard, who has completed initial entry-level training, may receive a credit of 15% of the total examination grade.
OPOTA Certification Credit:
Applicants who possess the Ohio Police Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certification may file proof of certification for a credit of 15%.
Applicants eligible for veterans' credit will receive priority in ranking over non-veterans with identical scores.
Examination Process:
The examination is conducted through the National Testing Network (NTN). Candidates must register for the exam either in person at a testing center or virtually. The nearest testing locations include:

Salary Information:
Starting Wage: $20.56/hour (without OPOTA Certification), $23.18/hour (with OPOTA Certification)
Top Wage: $30.21/hour
Employees with an associate degree or higher in law enforcement, police science, criminology, or criminal justice receive an additional $1.05/hour after completing the training period.

Department Overview:
The City of St. Mary's operates a full-time Police Department with 16 certified Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) officers. The department also includes a full-time Police/Fire/EMS dispatch center, a Custodian of Records, and a Code Enforcement Officer. The department provides 24-hour service through various means of transportation.
The department includes a full-time School Resource Officer (SRO), a full-time Detective with certifications in Master Criminal Investigation and Master Evidence Technician, and numerous other highly trained officers. Specialized roles within the department include firearms instructors, defensive tactics instructors, hostage/crisis negotiators, and a certified computer and cell phone forensics officer.
The department is also home to "Mattis," a dual-purpose K-9 trained in narcotics detection, tracking, and searches.

Job Requirements:
Age: Must be at least 21 years old by the date of the written exam and under 35 years old at the time of appointment.
Citizenship: U.S. citizen or holder of a valid permanent resident card.
Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Driver's License: Must possess a valid Ohio driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Language Skills: Must be able to read, write, and speak English.
Disqualification Criteria:
The following criteria may disqualify applicants. This list is not exhaustive, and other issues may result in removal from the eligibility list:
Any felony conviction.
Any 1st or 2nd-degree misdemeanor conviction within the past 5 years.
Any conviction related to narcotics or controlled substances.
Excessive drug or alcohol use, except in specific circumstances outlined by the City.
Any conviction related to sex offenses, violence, or bodily harm.
Recent OVI, reckless driving, or suspension of driving privileges.
Failure to pay alimony or child support, or failure to honor related court judgments.
Dishonesty or misleading statements during the application process.
Any admission of felony or misdemeanor offenses during the selection process.
All candidates for Police Officer positions are subject to pre-employment drug testing. The City reserves the right to investigate applicants' qualifications throughout the process.
