Description General Statement of Duties Performs firefighting, emergency medical, rescue, hazmat and fire equipment operation work in response to emergency situations.
Distinguishing Features of the Class An employee in this class will perform general firefighting duties, rescue, and emergency medical assistance. Work also includes preparing the apparatus, fire hoses and equipment for use at emergency incidents, following all safety rules and regulations and ensuring the proper use of safety equipment, and participating in training and drills. Promotes or participates in overall fire prevention efforts within the town. Work is often performed under stressful emergency conditions and frequently involves personal hazards. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Fire Lieutenant and/or the Fire Captain through observation and reports.
Examples of Duties Illustrative Examples of Work •Maintains readiness to respond to emergency and non-emergency requests for assistance.
•Receives and responds to fires and emergency calls.
•Provides responses to emergency calls and administers life support techniques and procedures.
•Participates in hazardous material response and prevention programs.
•Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fire including rescue, entry, and ventilation and salvage work.
•Rides fire apparatus to fire scene; connects hoses to hydrants and uses hoses to apply water or chemicals to fire; forces entry into burning structures and searches for and rescues occupants.
•Provides pre-incident planning to area businesses and buildings.
•Inspects, maintains apparatus and hose loads to ensure the presence, cleanliness, and serviceability of necessary firefighting and emergency equipment, tools and supplies.
•Performs testing and routine maintenance on vehicles; tests fire hydrants
•Maintains, performs minor repairs and cleans assigned fire station quarters and grounds.
•Presents programs and classes in schools.
•Participates in training to assure proficiency in all firefighting techniques; trains for knowledge of all equipment and apparatus as well as their operations; conducts residential and business fire prevention inspections; assists in preparing scale drawings and pre-plan firefighting strategies; maintains knowledge of sprinkled buildings and hydrant locations
•Participates in routine maintenance and servicing of equipment including checking and filling self contained breathing apparatus, washing and waxing trucks, checking batteries, checking fuel and oil levels, cleaning and drying hose, and inspecting hose and hose connections for damage and wear; sweeps, mops, paints, and washing windows of fire station
•Checks and flushes city fire hydrants for flow and pressure
•Conducts tours of the fire station
•Performs related work as assigned
•Employee will work twenty-four (24) hour shifts, twelve (12) hour shifts or any other combination of hours approved by the Chief Officers.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities •Knowledge of town geography, street locations, and hydrant locations
•Knowledge of current firefighting practices and procedures
•Knowledge of the operation of and maintenance requirements of fire equipment, pumps, hose pressures and other aspects of operating one or more variations of fire trucks
•Knowledge of firefighting hazards and related safety precautions
•Ability to present fire prevention/safety training to school age children through senior citizens
•Ability to represent the city fire department in a positive manner
•Skill in using firefighting tools and equipment such as a pry bar, axe, hose, nozzles, air packs, fans, shovels, rakes, sledge hammers, jaws-of-life, defibrillator, engine trucks and others
Typical Qualifications Education and Experience Completion of high school or GED equivalency.
Special Requirements Must be at least 18 years of age
NC Hazardous Material Operations Certification
NC Firefighter Certification
Emergency Medical Technician - Basic
Emergency Vehicle Driver Certification (preferred)
North Carolina Class B Driver's License (preferred)

Additional Information Physical Requirements The employee is subject to the same physical requirements of other fire employees which is heavy work requiring exertion of in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employee must have the physical stamina to endure the rigors of intensive firefighting and salvage work. Employee must have the visual acuity to operate equipment and to distinguish colors and see peripherally in both eyes.
Working Conditions The employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions including exposure to extreme heat (above 100 degrees F) and extreme cold (below 32 degrees F). Employee is subject to noise, vibration, and hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working in high places, exposure to high heat, and exposure to chemicals. Employee is subject to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin including oils and greases and is also required to wear a respirator or self-contained breathing devices in certain instances. Employee frequently works in close quarters and areas which could cause claustrophobia. Employee may be exposed to blood or blood-borne pathogens when providing emergency medical services. At times the work is performed in conditions of extreme temperatures and danger for prolonged periods of time during which time one's vision may be partially or totally obscured. Work is often performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves personal hazard.
