Brief Description of Duties: The Nurse Educator provides educational instruction, evaluation, and leadership to students enrolled in nursing programs at The University of the District of Columbia’s Workforce Development and Lifelong Learning Division (UDC--WDLL). The position assists in the development of curriculum on lifecycle patient care, healthcare/nursing-related education plans, and evidenced-based research within the specialized area of nursing. The Nurse Educator evaluates programs for effectiveness and meets WDLL goals to optimize student experience(s) and service delivery. The incumbent is the instructor and ensures instruction aligned with national healthcare standards, DC Department of Health standards, curricula, and other state and Federal requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develops instructional nursing program course(s) content designed to meet requirements and compliances of the DC Board of Nursing, national healthcare standards, foundations of High-Performing Healthcare Organization, approaches of best practices, practical strategies for improving gaps and learning needs. Instructional materials include, but are not limited to, lesson plans, classroom reports, using web-based electronic health records system(s) as aids to demonstrate healthcare simulation quality to enhance students’ critical thinking and learning of patient care, clinical practices, etc.
  • Serves as WDLL liaison to other university nursing program leadership/staff members, the DC Board of Nursing, and other internal and external organizations, as necessary.
  • Instructs students, develops assessments, and evaluates score competencies of students. Provides classroom, laboratory, and clinical practicum instruction.
  • Conducts “Boot Camps” as a remedial tool to strengthen the knowledge, skills, abilities, and confidence levels of students for the National Nurse Aide Assessment (NNAAP) District of Columbia licensure examination. Administers practice tests and monitors student progress. Uses tools such as verbal interviews, written examinations, and performance tests.
  • Plans, directs, and coordinates interdisciplinary teams and content that promote professional development.
  • Responsible for onboarding/orientation of newly hired adjunct faculty; responsible for the ongoing assessment of competency and evaluation of performance; provision of continuing nursing education.
  • Conducts extensive fact-finding and development of source information and training materials.
  • Participates in panel discussions, and/or participates in planning and developing or evaluating and revising curriculum for the nursing programs.
  • Manages student clinical practicum rotations with partnering healthcare facilities for students and clinical faculty.
  • Reviews and approves student/faculty clinical practicum requirements and additional documents for submission to approved clinical facilities and semesterly enrollment(s) (e.g., medical health clearances PPD/Chest X-ray, proof of immunizations, 7-series drug screening, national criminal background, and Healthcare Provider CPR – American Heart Association).
  • Conducts conferences with individual students and refers students to counselors and other supportive services as the need arises.
  • Actively participates in healthcare pathway program workshops and University staff and in-service meetings.
  • Represents the division’s nursing programs at monthly DC Board of Nursing meetings.
  • Assists in the development of annual reports to the DC Board of Nursing.
  • Prepares program activity reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Must be a certified licensed Registered Nurse (RN) within the District of Columbia plus possess a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
  • Must minimally possess two years of experience in a long-term health care setting.
  • Specific and direct knowledge of education principles and program development techniques, but not limited to the nursing field.
  • Have completed a course in teaching adults or have experience in teaching adults and supervising nursing assistive personnel.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of protecting sensitive personal/patient information in accordance with the Federal Privacy Act and national standards Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills that are clear and concise.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience using automated systems, databases, learning management platforms, and online teaching and learning methodologies and best practices in the healthcare field.
