Job Summary:
This position leads the statewide effort for NAS surveillance. Under the oversight of the Surveillance and Program Managers, this position leads surveillance activities by reviewing reported cases, completing medical chart reviews for missing or incomplete cases, and classifying cases according to ADHS and CSTE definitions, as applicable.
This position is responsible for medical chart review and abstraction for the Arizona Birth Defects Monitoring Program, specifically focusing on neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) and substance exposed newborns (SEN). This position will support birth defects surveillance; and perform birth defects case abstraction as needed.
Primary duties include medical chart review, determination of applicable diagnoses through medical chart analysis and interpretation, abstraction of details, and case entry into the appropriate database.
Review of health records; to ascertain necessary information requires understanding of medical terminology, and attention to detail to accurately determine specific diagnoses.
This position may: assist with chart access requests, travel to facilities, conduct data quality reviews, participate in related meetings, and perform other related tasks as assigned.
Previous experience, knowledge, and/or understanding of medical records, medical terminology, medical coding, substance exposure, and/or working in a medical setting preferred.
Job Duties:
Review medical charts and complete NAS and Birth Defect(s) cases in MEDSIS or other database.
Actively participate in NAS workgroups and grantee meetings, and appropriately represent ABDMP at NAS-related meetings, as requested.
Assist in writing and submitting grant reports and updates, meeting grant deliverables, and facilitating program activities in relation to NAS funding.
Other duties as assigned as related to the position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of:
* Standard medical records, medical terminology, and medical coding;
* Substance exposure and/or substance use/abuse;
* Neonatal abstinence syndrome and/or perinatal substance use;
* Basic anatomy and physiology;
* Pathophysiology, dysmorphology, and/or a basic understanding of birth defects.
* Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Lean methodologies
Skill in:
* Medical chart review;
* Medical chart interpretation;
* Medical record navigation/understanding;
* Written and verbal communication;
Ability to:
* Process medical chart details and apply to specific case classifications;
* Interpret abstract information and process into specific case details;
* Ability to use complex thinking in determining applicable diagnoses through medical chart analysis and interpretation;
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Ability to represent the Program in meetings.
