About the Organization

The National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) is a private, not-for-profit organization established in 1952 to provide a uniform date of appointment to positions in graduate medical education (GME) in the United States. The NRMP is not an application processing service; rather, it provides an impartial venue for matching applicants’ and programs’ preferences for each other consistently. The NRMP conducts the annual Main Residency Match encompassing 40,000 applicants for more than 30,000 positions in core residencies as well as Matches for fellowship positions in over 65 subspecialties through its Specialties Matching Service®.

Position Summary

The Mixed Methods Research Analyst will support the implementation of the NRMP’s growing research agenda. The overarching goal of the NRMP’s research agenda is to elevate the NRMP’s thought leadership, inform understanding and guide improvements of processes and outcomes related to the transition from undergraduate (medical school) to graduate medical education (residency and fellowship training), and evaluate the career trajectories of the physician work force through rigorous, state-of-the-science evidence. This Analyst will utilize quantitative and qualitative data collection tools, protocols, and analyses to support development of data visualizations, reports, and manuscripts for scientific and lay audiences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inform the construction of NRMP surveys to ensure both accessibility and accuracy of survey data.
  • Develop and implement both quantitative and qualitative data collection tools.
  • Create and document analytic data sets appropriate to the types of data collected (e.g., qualitative versus quantitative), managing and manipulating data from both internal and external data sources to prepare for project-specific analyses.
  • Develop, implement, and document data cleaning, error checking, and recoding and composite variable creation programs using SAS to facilitate a broad range of statistical analyses.
  • Support Director of Research and/or Senior Research Analysts in developing both quantitative and qualitative analytic plans.
  • Export analytic data sets from SAS into other file formats as required for upload into the NRMP Data Warehouse, analyses to be conducted using different statistical software, or other organizational needs.
  • Support the Senior Director of Research and executive leadership as needed in creating or updating spreadsheets, tables, charts, and graphs as needed for publications and presentations.
  • Draft relevant sections of manuscripts, e.g., analysis subsection of Methods, text of Results (both quantitative and qualitative).
  • Collaborate with the Director of Research and/or Senior Research Analysts in drafting deliverables involving the translation of scientific/statistical concepts to a variety of audiences.

Education, Previous Experience and Training

  • Master’s Degree in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, public health, or a social and behavioral science discipline (psychology, sociology, education) is required.
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of relevant experience involving both quantitative and qualitative analyses is required.
  • Experience in managing and manipulating large statistical data sets, including cleaning, error checking, recoding, and composite variable creation, as well as creation of codebooks and similar documentation, is required.
  • Documented experience and proficiency in:
    • Data preparation (e.g., transcription/review of transcripts of qualitative interviews or focus groups, organizing free-text responses from online surveys);
    • Implementation of qualitative analysis techniques (e.g., content/thematic analysis and grounded theory methods)

Technical Knowledge and Skills

Required

  • Demonstrated proficiency in extracting quantitative and qualitative data from diverse sources and using appropriate data management, organization, and manipulation techniques to construct analytic data sets.
  • Advanced skills in programming, implementing, and documenting complex statistical analyses of large data sets using SAS, ranging from descriptive statistics to linear and logistic regression, generalized linear models, multilevel models, and latent variable modeling. Expertise in use of SAS macro language is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated understanding of theoretical approaches to qualitative data analysis and proficiency in developing and refining deductive and inductive qualitative coding schemas.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of qualitative analytic software applications, preferably ATLAS.ti.
  • Strong analytic, critical thinking, and written communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise process documentation of analytic and methodological protocols, and ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated experience in data visualization using Excel, Tableau, or similar applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and visualize results in formats appropriate to the types of analyses to be presented for scientific products such as manuscripts for peer-reviewed journal submissions as well as conference presentations, white papers, and Board reports.

Preferred

  • Experience in performing statistical analyses including factor analysis, multilevel modeling, and structural equation modeling.
  • Experience with or understanding of undergraduate and graduate medical education and the residency selection process.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks to meet deadlines and to shift tasks as needed given changing priorities and project scopes.
