Job Description SUMMARY Assists other manufacturing engineers as well as production in developing, transitioning, proving out and executing projects by performing the following duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. - Product transitions: Aid in and lead transitions from engineering to production using standard operating procedures.
- Process/Product improvements: General understanding of manufacturing efficiency (Lean practices) to be able to analyze and plan workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout. Creating and leading continuous improvement opportunities to aid in meeting the yearly company goals.
- Solid Modeling: Assist with designing fixturing and tooling with an approved solid modeling program and creating properly dimensioned drawings to geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD T) standards (ANSI/ASME Y14.5M-1994). The engineer will be expected to advance their skill level to average and/or proficient. 1-2 years of SolidWorks is preferred.
- Technical Writing, Reporting Data Analysis: Spearhead writing and presenting technical reports. Creation and implementation of procedures for use by other engineering or management personnel. The development of good writing skills is essential. Data collection and analysis experience is required. 2-3 years of LabVIEW is preferred.
- Presentation Skills:Assist with preparing and presenting technical presentations and briefings. Demonstration of the ability to create professional presentations and present them with confidence is an important skill for advancement.
- Sales Support: Supports sales through proposal writing, conducting analysis, and generating solutions to customers' requirements, preparing datasheets, customer visits, and preparing cost/bid support information.
- "Hands On" Related DutiesMost of Boyd's work involves the support of production through designing, fabrication and testing of complex prototype hardware, fixtures, and assemblies. As a result, Boyd encourages "Hands-on" engineering activity. As a result, an engineer will be trained to perform work on the plant floor by assisting other engineers, technicians, production associates in the fabrication, test and delivery of hardware, fixtures, assemblies. This "Hands-on" experience is a valuable learning step as the engineer's career progresses. This work involves:
- Machining
- Brazing (torch and atmosphere furnaces)
- Welding
- Operation of furnaces
- Assembly work
- Test setup and testing using developed plans and experimental test programs and fabrication procedures. Analyzes test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.
- Minor electrical work
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and/or Experience Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Engineering from a four-year accredited college or university with less than five years of relevant work experience. Mechanical, Industrial, or Chemical is preferred.
Language Skills Has the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general technical periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Has the ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Has the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and employees.
Mathematical Skills Has the ability to apply mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, derivatives and permutations. Has the ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as calculating heat transfer, predicting heat pipe performance, predicting single and two phase device performance, determination of test results, reliability and validity, analysis of variances, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
Reasoning Ability Has the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Has the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills Has the ability to effectively use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project, and Outlook.
Preferred skills include SolidWorks, LabVIEW, Teams, Oracle Cloud (ERP system).
Work Area Cleanliness
The cubicle area is to be neatly organized and maintained by the owner. There shall be no material visible above the top of the cubicle wall. No material is to be stacked on the floor or in corners. In addition, the cubicle area shall not be a project material inventory location. Desktop and tabletops shall be neat and orderly and absent of stacks of papers, literature, magazines and books.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is required to stand; walk; sit; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. In addition, the position requires occasional travel on airplanes and automobiles to visit customers to review progress, present findings, plan additional work, and support sales.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
