Your opportunity:

The Technoscience Research Unit (TRU) is an Indigenous-led and interdisciplinary hub for creative and critical social science, humanities, and design research concerning science and technology, with a strength in Indigenous-led research, environmental justice, and data/AI ethics. The TRU is affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Science, the Faculty of Information, and the Acceleration Consortium. The TRU hosts an Indigenous Environmental Data Justice (EDJ) Lab, which does community-based work, organizes public events and workshops, and supports the research of students, faculty and community researchers. It also hosts an Indigenous Science, Technology, and Environment Research Hub. The TRU is particularly dedicated to f supporting BIPOC, 2SLGBTQA+, and community researchers. (TRU) is committed to supporting individuals in enhancing their skills for contributing to the work of our indigenous community-based research.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, this position will take the lead in organizing and designing Indigenous community-based Environmental Data Justice research at the TRU. Theywill take a leadership position in relation to research at the EDJ Lab, which has focused on Canada’s Chemical Valley. This position will work closely with the PI to design, fund-raise, and create research projects that are led by and meet the needs of Indigenous community members towards questions of environmental justice and Indigenous understandings of sustainability in relation to chemical pollutants. They will lead and contribute to research that brings Indigenous knowledges about chemical pollutants and environmental justice towards the creation of new tools, information, digital technologies, policies, and understandings that better meet the needs of Indigenous communities, and are created through Indigenous based research method.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing and executing qualitative and/or quantitative research methods
  • Designing and implementing Indigenous community research methods
  • Synthesizing technical, qualitative and contextual research data; preparing draft reports from data collected and training others on research methods
  • Drafting and submitting documented procedures to the Research Ethics Board (REB) for approval, submitting manuscripts, drafting and editing partnership agreements and conducting systematic literature reviews
  • Researching, analyzing and recommending grant opportunities as well as writing grant applications
  • Analyzing detailed information to inform project direction; assessing and selecting methods of data collection and analysis for research including overseeing the data collection and analysis processes
  • Coordinating meeting schedules, agendas, materials, action and follow-up items
  • Draftingpresentations materials and delivering presentations at conferences

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in indigenous studies, or related disciplines, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum five (5) years of relevant research work experience in community-based environmental data justice, including experience working with Indigenous community partners
  • Demonstrated experience working and collaborating with Indigenous leaders, communities, and/or organizations
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency with coordinating meetings and planning events
  • Demonstrated experience with grants preparation and submission
  • Demonstrated project management and research knowledge, experience and methodologies in relation to Indigenous research projects
  • Experience using Indigenous ceremonial, conversation-based, and arts-based methods
  • Experience with data analysis, Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must have a solid understanding of Indigenous affairs, environmental data justice, and cultural traditional knowledge
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, show initiative and good judgment, and be an effective team member
  • Ability to maintain a broad perspective; ability to foster and maintain effective relationships with all levels
  • Strong communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management and problem-solving skills with the ability to meet conflicting priorities and balance multiple projects
  • Demonstrates initiative and possesses a strong commitment to research work
