Heavy Equipment Operator I (Highway Division) Responsibilities include general operator and laborer duties for the Department of Public Works (DPW) across the Highway, Waste Water, Water, and Solid Waste Divisions. The role requires safe and competent operation of a wide range of equipment and machinery, such as backhoes, front‑end loaders, mini‑excavators, skid steers, sweepers, sanders, snow plows, road‑side mowers, catch basin cleaners, vibratory screeners, rollers, small and large trucks, chippers, mowers, tampers, chainsaws, saws, brush power cutters, jackhammers, compressors, and other power equipment. Additionally, employees participate in the town’s snow and ice removal operations and emergency response activities. Minimum qualifications: High school equivalency or greater education, including one to two years of college or an associate’s degree, journeyman or trade certification. More than three years, up to five years, of full‑time related work experience. Maintenance of required licenses: Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer’s License 2B, 4E and 4G (Highway HEO) and a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsement. Successful completion of a Criminal Offender Records Inquiry, a pre‑employment physical, and a drug screening. Location: DPW Building, 2721 Boston Road, Wilbraham, MA.
