WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
The Sr. Food Scientist collaborates with R&D, Operations, Marketing, Sales, Finance, and external partners. They support product development by working with contract manufacturers on new product launches and optimization. Key responsibilities include collecting and evaluating documentation for raw materials, creating specifications and formulas for finished goods, and applying a comprehensive approach to commercialization. This role requires hands-on experience in product creation, sensory, cost, and timing requirements, as well as a strong understanding of food science principles, food microbiology, and lab best practices.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop prototypes and execute the launch of new and existing product reformulation by using a quality by design approach, from bench-top to pilot-plant and through to plant-scale with the goal of confirming stability and label claims across shelf life.
- Plan, execute, and manage the development of product prototypes in the lab, pilot plant and at production facilities, while maintaining strict technical and experimental documentation.
- Responsible for establishing sensory profiles of products, both internally and externally, to ensure the formulation conforms to consumer expectations.
- Troubleshoot formula/process design failures and ingredient qualification to approve substitutions and/or product
- Independently manages medium to high technical complexity projects according to stage gate
- Serve as technical lead for product development, product/process optimization by providing guidance on commercialization, risk management and timelines, in collaboration with Marketing, Operations & the cross functional team (following stage gate methodology).
- Partner and communicate effectively with cross-functional groups to provide technical expertise: Marketing, Sales, QA, Procurement, Finance, Operations, and Engineering; create and influence project direction by providing technical input through the planning and decision-making process.
- Collaborates with contract manufacturing partners and raw material suppliers to identify the best approach during the product development process.
- Identify new ingredient suppliers that bring technological advantages to Simply Good Foods and share insights across the R&D organization to establish areas of synergy within the product portfolio.
- Strong product development skills in material selection, ingredient functionality and formulation of salty snacks and/ or sheeted products is a plus.
- Responsible for preparing all raw material and product specifications documentation required prior to start
- Ensuring all developed products meet nutrition, regulatory, and food labeling
- Provide technical support to manufacturing partners and quality team during the execution of innovation and renovation
- Possess technical leadership to execute time sensitive projects, including alternate line qualification, Coman qualifications and/or supplier/ingredient qualifications.
- Manages multiple projects, able to prioritize and be flexible to rapidly changing business
- Provide judgment and experience to assure that an appropriate level of technical knowledge and discipline are being employed and utilized in business decisions
KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:
- Ability to acquire and adapt new commercialization technologies for successful product launches
- Strong knowledge of nutrition science, ingredient functionality and product formulations (i.e. methods and techniques used to transform raw ingredients into food, understanding of process science and how formulas must be amended to fit specific co-packers)
- Knowledge of product formulation for defined functional requirements and consumer benefits, such as: macronutrient composition requirements, calories and micronutrients, satiety, appearance, scent, and taste.
- Ensure compliance with standard operating procedures and support the implementation of new processes related to documentation, including maintaining product development document control for all raw materials, substantiation, finished product specifications, etc.
- Ability to stay up to date on new trends in macro nutrients scientific advancements, relevant to innovation product roadmap and concept designs.
- Strong working knowledge of shelf stable food product development, food manufacturing processes, quality assurance principles, ingredient supply market, market research practices, and product commercialization.
- Strong background in new product development, with a focus on shelf stable food product development, salty snack and or Sheeted products is a plus.
- Excellent planning, organizational, and project management
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to define problems, collect and interpret data, draw valid conclusions, and propose solutions.
- Skilled in interpreting and communicating complex scientific concepts to provide the scientific foundation for product education and creative assets.

Salary
$95,000 - $115,000
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- BS/BA degree in Engineering, Food Science, Chemistry, or related fields,
- Minimum 7-10 years progressive (or combined) experience in CPG, R&D and/or the Food Industry
- Hands on experience in manufacturing with yield analysis, troubleshooting, and optimization of products
- Experience with Genesis and Trace gains software, highly
- Location: Broomfield, CO
- Travel Requirements: 25%, up to 40% as needed
- Work is performed in a fast-paced office environment and may be stressful at times. Work may require sitting for long periods of time; requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, calculator, telephone, copier and fax machine and scanner.

In this spirit, we are excited to share the available compensation for this role, which includes a base salary range and an annual short-term incentive.
We provide the base salary range, exclusive of benefits or additional incentives (
highlighted here ). Additionally, this position is eligible for a
10% annual
short-term incentive . If you are hired at Simply Goods Foods, your final base salary compensation will be determined based upon such factors as: geographic locations, skills, training, education and/or experience. Please keep in mind that hiring at the compensation range maximum would not be typical to allow for future and continued salary growth.
CO salary range is: $95,000-$115,000
