Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provides educational services to Department inmates and detainees
- ABE: adult basic education
- ESOL: English as a second language
2. Initiates, plans and supervises academic and/or vocational curriculum
3. Counsels inmates on educational needs and assists in placement determinations
4. Performs related duties as assigned.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED
1. At the Jail reports to the Assistant Deputy Superintendent
2. At the House of Correction reports through the Education Supervisor to the Director of Education.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Depending on assignment, instructs inmates in adult basic education or ESOL.
2. Assists in the formulation of curriculum guides to determine the most effective methods and materials to meet the needs of the inmates.
3. Depending on assignment, develops, prepares and provides curriculum and educational services to inmates; plans curriculum to meet assigned skill level;
provides instruction for assigned academic skill level; interviews prospective students for class placement; assesses and records individual student progress.
4. Maintains progress reports on each inmate indicating academic development and discusses behavior and educational problems with appropriate staffs.
5. Counsels inmates on educational requirements and any emotional, social or physical problems evidenced in the classroom,
and gives special tests to determine educational needs.
6. Teaches multiple inmate classes on a daily basis.
7. Is responsible for the organization, cleanliness and control of the classroom area
8. Maintains monthly enrollment statistics and accurate time records for students
9. Demonstrates flexibility and ability to learn and perform new duties and skills.
10. Performs other duties as the Sheriff may assign.


QUALIFICATIONS
1. Considerable knowledge required of:
a) community resources and programs available to aid inmates;
b) practices and procedures of teaching;
c) individual, emotional and behavioral patterns and impact of cultural, racial, educational and economic factors in society
2. Working knowledge of Department policies; knowledge of education, classification and therapeutic processes preferable but not required
3. Considerable ability to:
a) listen attentively and work effectively with inmates;
b) maintain a harmonious relationship with staff, community agencies, and clients;
c) recognize specific educational and substance abuse tendencies
4. Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, or sociology and a valid Massachusetts Teacher's Certificate.
5. At least one year of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in the area of reading, mathematics, and ABE preferred.
6. Computer experience required. Familiarity with Microsoft Windows and Excel preferred.
7. Excellent oral and written communication skills essential.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Instruct inmates in assigned material in a classroom setting, including instructing inmates on subject matter, reading and commenting on inmates' work and interacting with inmates during class;
  2. Regular, punctual and predictable attendance at assigned workplace, assigned class periods and at scheduled meetings;
  3. Knowledge of, compliance with, and enforcement of Department policies and procedures;
  4. Compliance with security procedures;
  5. Obeying of moderately complex oral and written orders;
  6. Communicating effectively both orally and in writing;
  7. Able to independently initiate a project, execute the necessary steps, and complete in a timely and effective manner;
  8. Deal calmly and effectively with stressful situations, including emergencies; and
  9. Exercise good judgment.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. communicate orally to inmates;
  2. read and comment on inmates' assignments and writings;
  3. instruct inmates in classroom setting;
  4. sit or stand periodically for 8 hours;
  5. lift up to 5 pounds;
  6. carry up to 5 pounds;
  7. climb stairs occasionally;
  8. walk short distances; and
  9. write and type.
