ABOUT US: The Schaumburg Park District is an award-winning parks and recreation agency that provides its 80,000 residents with a wide variety of recreational programs, classes, and events, as well as facilities, parks, and open spaces! Spring Valley features 135 acres of prairie, woodlands, and wetlands, three miles of walking trails, a nature center, an 1880s living history farm and Bison’s Bluff Nature Playground.

 

JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Environmental Education, the Environmental Education Specialist designs and leads environmental education programs for all ages and interest groups within the community. They will maintain a commitment to operating a safe and effective nature program, communicating effectively with guardians or teachers before, during, and after the program on an as needed basis. They will set up and clean up their programming space, ensuring cleanliness at the end of the day for other activities taking place in the facility. They will be responsible for assisting with the maintenance and enhancement of hands-on exhibits in the Nature Center Museum. They will organize and repair collections, education equipment, and program supplies. They will assist visitors, staff, and volunteers with natural history-related questions. They will attend all trainings pertaining to their job. They will also handle all other duties as directed by supervisor.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: The best applicant will possess a B.S or its equivalent in Environmental or Outdoor Education, Biology, the Natural Sciences, or a related field. They will have at least 2 full years of experience with outdoor program development and presentation. They will have excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as strong organization skills. They will have the ability and flexibility to adapt programs as needed to meet the needs of a group, or due to changing weather conditions. They will be able to perform their job duties out-of-doors in all types of weather. They will be able to work both independently, as well as a team. They will demonstrate good computer skills through the use of word processing, graphic, and database programs. Having a flexible working schedule is preferred. Having knowledge and understanding of Illinois ecosystems, plants, and wildlife is preferred. Possess certification through National Association for Interpretation’s CIG (Certified Interpretive Guide) program is preferred. Possession of CPR/AED certification is required; training is provided if not certified.

 

SCHEDULING & PAY: This is a year-round, part-time position paying $17.00/hour. Schedule is generally 3 days per week 8:30am-4:30pm, plus occasional evenings and weekends during spring, fall and winter seasons. During the summer season, schedule is 5-6 days per week.
