Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is in the Programme Management Unit (PMU) of the Economic Analysis and Policy Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The Division is mandated to provide strategic and policy support to Member States in the areas of economic and development policies. The Economic Affairs Officer reports to the Director and working with EAPD’s focal point for Middle-Income Countries. For more information, see: ResponsibilitiesUnder the direct supervision of the Director of the Economic Analysis and Policy Division, the Economic Affairs Officer is responsible for the following duties: Economic analysis: • Undertakes qualitative and quantitative analyses of development issues across the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. • Designs and conducts studies of selected issues in economic development and draft resulting reports, of particular relevance for middle-income countries. • Undertakes desk research to assess the current state of support of the UN development system for middle-income countries and prepares a benchmarking study of the current development status and challenges of middle-income countries. • Develops draft elements of a specific response plan, aimed at better addressing the multidimensional nature of sustainable development and facilitating sustainable development cooperation and coordinated and inclusive support to middle-income countries based on their specific challenge and diverse needs . • Attends international, regional, and national meetings to hold discussions with representatives of other institutions. • Organizes expert group meetings, seminars, etc. on development issues related to middle-income countries. • Prepares speeches and other inputs for presentations by senior staff. Intergovernmental support • Provides substantive support on economic issues to intergovernmental bodies such as the Second Committee of the General Assembly, and the Economic and Social Council and its High-Level Political Forum. General • Hires, coordinates and supervises consultants, reviewing their work and providing feedback. • Performs other related duties as required. EducationAdvanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Job - Specific QualificationNot available. Work ExperienceA minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area is required. Experience in servicing expert group meetings and intergovernmental processes on issues relevant to the position is desirable. Experience in producing research papers and analytical reports for publication is desirable. Two years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable. Experience in coordination of multistakeholder and inter-agency processes are required. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
