Performs all duties, tasks and maintenance related to Deck operations and gear onboard mid-water trawl catcher processor vessels over 275ft.
Primary Job Functions: - Performs daily fishing operations, as directed by the Bosun/ Night Bosun/ Captain/ Chief Mate.
- Demonstrates understanding of safe and efficient fishing operations, safety training and equipment related to the Deck department and performance of the vessel.
- Maintains full awareness of potential job hazards and operates in a safe manner. Assists in establishing a safe work environment through continued guidance and training of new and entry level Deck crew.
- Participates in all haul backs, sets and net repairs during trawl operations. Able to prepare, dump and repair cod-ends during mothership operations.
- Able to make repairs to nets and fishing gear including: splicing wire and rope, mending web/nets. Demonstrates ability to use tools, such as net needles, Marlinspike and knife, safely and efficiently.
- Able to operate equipment such as pedestal cranes, forklifts and winches proficiently. Maintains current applicable certifications and demonstrates working knowledge of the equipment in relation to the Deck environment.
- Able to safely perform vessel skiff operations including: loading and unloading, operation, maintenance and vessel transfers as directed by the Captain/ Chief Mate.
- Able to anchor vessel as well as tie the vessel to the dock or another vessel as required.
- Able to diagnose, communicate and correct equipment and/or operational problems. Reports all problems and/or repairs to the Bosun/ Night Bosun in a timely manner.
- Actively participates in gear maintenance and cleanup projects to ensure a safe, orderly Deck environment, both at sea and in the shipyard.
- Forms a part of the vessel Emergency Response and Fire Team and participates in all drills and real life events. Maintains current related safety training certifications.
- Learns and maintains current knowledge and compliance with applicable regulations to include, though not limited to: environmental, OSHA, and USCG, as directed by the Captain, office and vessel management teams.
- Able to communicate effectively with supervisors, management and coworkers to maintain a team oriented, safety conscious work environment.
Additional Duties - Actively participates in all assigned training, drills and safety meetings as directed by supervisors, Captain and office personnel.
- Maintains current licensing and certification to include all required recertification courses.
- Participates in the regular inspection, maintenance and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as instructed by Bosun/ Night Bosun.
- Demonstrates ability to safely fulfill functions without endangering self or others.
- Supports rotation schedule as agreed with the Bosun and Night Bosun based on the needs of the vessel during fishing operations, ship yard, as well as for sea trials and vessel during scheduled dry dock periods between seasons, as needed.
- Communicates effectively with Chief Engineer and office staff during shipyard operations, assisting and/or performing maintenance and repairs to Deck equipment to include but not limited to: maintenance to cables, cranes, nets, skiff winches and all other fishing gear.
- Documents maintenance and repairs as required and communicates information to the appropriate supervisor as directed by the Bosun and/or Chief Engineer.
- Participates in maintaining up to date inventory logs of all items used in the Deck department as directed by the Bosun/Captain.
- Demonstrates ability and willingness to work on any task where and when needed, including assisting the processing factory with completing fishing operations in a timely manner.
- Maintains current contact information via phone and/or email with Bosun and Vessel Recruiters to ensure all rotation obligations are met.
- Supportive of management decisions and goals.
Conditions on the Vessel: - Shifts are 12-16 hours per day, 7 days a week for the duration of the fishing contract.
- Fishing contracts are seasonal, duration based on the season and the availability of fish. Shipyard contracts, between seasons, are based on rotation schedule provided by the Bosun.
- Deck crew are regularly exposed to the elements. The environment is cold and wet and weather will cause the vessel to move unexpectedly during operation.
- Deck equipment requires work around large, heavy, moving equipment in an often loud environment.
- Crewmembers are provided with a bunk, mattress and locker in crew quarters.
- Crew lounge provides access to two computer kiosks for short-term usage during breaks.

Minimum Requirements
- Minimum 2yrs deck experience, preferably with experience on mid-water trawl, catcher processor vessels over 275ft.
- Preferred: Able-Bodied Seaman (AB) or AB Unlimited Merchant Mariner Credential or ability to attain/renew license in a timely manner.
- Current Fire-Fighting and 1st Aid/ CPR certifications or ability to attain through company paid training.
- Pedestal Crane Operator, Forklift Operator and Hazwoper certifications, or ability to attain certification through company training.
- Prior training in Trawl Deck Safety and Cold Water Survival, whether formal or on the job preferred.
Physical and Mental Expectations: - Regularly requires the ability to receive instruction, communicate, read and identify signs and alerts in English. Regularly requires symbol recognition and memorization.
- Standing for long periods of time, lifting up to 75-100lbs, pushing/pulling, reaching, twisting/turning, hand eye coordination. Movements occasionally include, bending/stooping, squatting/kneeling, climbing and crawling.
- Able to navigate steep stairways, gangways, Jacob's ladder and/or upper bunk un-assisted.
- Dexterity: able to work while wearing gloves, and maintain balance while walking/standing.
- Visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, capable of fine detail, and distance vision.
- Able to adjust to shipboard working and living conditions in close quarters, far from home for long periods.
- Ability to work as part of a team in a professional, respectful manner with coworkers, shipmates, company personnel and visitors.
Employee Responsibility: - Employees taking medication or requiring eyeglasses or contacts need a backup pair/sufficient supply to last at least 90 days.
- Maintains physical and dental health in preparation for work at sea, far from medical facilities, pharmacies or dental services.
- Employees provide their own bedding: blanket, sheets and pillows. Large, thick blankets or sleeping bags require a removable duvet cover or sleeping bag liner for washing.
- Enough clothing, socks, warm layers, to last 8-9 days between laundry dates, comfortable shoes for crew lounge/eating areas, and toiletries for up to 90 days.
