We are seeking a Data Scientist to support Professional Support Services (PSS) for SEA 21, Naval Sea System Command's (NAVSEA) Director of Surface Ship Maintenance, Modernization, and Sustainment in Washington, D.C.

I’ve never heard of Terrestris. What do you do?

At Terrestris, we leverage technology to create better mission outcomes through better human performance. We form strong client and team relationships through transparency and strive to create an environment where our team can let their excellence shine through. So, what will the Data Scientist at Terrestris do?

SEA 21 is the dedicated life cycle management organization for the Navy's in-service surface ships. As the Data Scientist, you will leverage data to drive strategic decision-making for fleet readiness, lifecycle management, and modernization planning across the U.S. Navy’s surface ship portfolio. You will support Professional Support Services (PSS) by delivering actionable insights from complex datasets, streamlining decision processes, and helping optimize ship maintenance and modernization planning through data analytics, modeling, and visualization.

What does a typical day look like for the Data Scientist?

You will:

  • Analyze large and complex datasets related to ship readiness, maintenance scheduling, modernization progress, and logistics.
  • Develop statistical models, predictive analytics, and machine learning tools to support fleet maintenance and modernization planning.
  • Create data visualizations, dashboards, and reports that translate technical findings into actionable insights for decision-makers.
  • Collaborate with engineers, logistics analysts, program managers, and IT personnel across SEA 21 and affiliated Program Executive Offices (PEOs).
  • Support data governance, integration, and quality initiatives to ensure consistent and accurate use of operational and maintenance data.
  • Translate Navy operational requirements and lifecycle sustainment objectives into analytic strategies.
  • Assist with the automation of data pipelines and development of tools to improve workflow efficiency and visibility into key performance indicators.
  • Participate in technical briefings and deliver presentations to senior leadership.

What qualifications do you look for?

You might be the professional we’re looking for if you have:

  • An Active Secret Clearance.
  • Authorization to permanently work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Math, Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in a relevant field.
  • Proficiency with Python, R, SQL, and/or MATLAB for data processing and analysis.
  • Experience using data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of statistical methods, machine learning, and predictive analytics.
  • Familiarity with DoD or Navy maintenance and logistics systems, especially within NAVSEA or the SEA 21 portfolio, is a strong plus.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

We are extra impressed by folks with:

  • Master’s degree in a quantitative or engineering discipline.
  • Experience working within Navy systems like VAMOSC, AIM, or SHIPMAIN.
  • Background in ship maintenance planning, sustainment strategy, or lifecycle management.
  • Prior NAVSEA, SEA 21, or Program Executive Office Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS) experience.
  • Familiarity with Agile project management and data-centric decision environments.
