Job Description
The Certified Retail Pharmacy Technician, under the direction and supervision of a pharmacist, will assist in the preparation, dispensing, charging and delivery of medications and front-end items to patients. Patients served include all age groups.
Responsibilities: \n
\n - Reviews, transmits, and receives wholesaler orders as required.
\n - Demonstrates and understanding and ability to use current equipment including robotics, electronic workflow systems, printers, computers, fax machines, telephones, POS, etc.
\n - Communicates with third party payers to obtain adjudications of prescription claims.
\n - Interprets, performs necessary pharmaceutical calculations and enters prescriptions the into pharmacy information system for pharmacist review. Completes all necessary documentation.
\n - Answers telephone using appropriate verbiage, screen and triage inquiries.
\n - Assists patients at drop off and or pick up and obtains pertinent patient information for inclusion into electronic profile.
\n - Prepare and compound medications (i.e. solutions, creams, and ointments) under the supervision of the pharmacist.
\n - Accurate preparation, labeling and packaging of medications for dispensing under the supervision of the pharmacist.
\n - Daily contact with patients, nursing personnel, physicians and other ancillary employees.
\n - Performs other duties as assigned.
\n - Travels among UPMC facilities when necessary and as directed to complete assigned pharmacy activities.
\n - Participates in Performance Improvement as it relates to the department.
\n - Promotes Mission, Vision, and Values of UPMC.
\n - Performs related duties as required or assigned.
\n - Maintains pharmacy in clean, orderly and safe manner by restocking shelves, cleaning workstations, returning medications to stock, etc.
\n - Assists in training new employees and pharmacy students with regard to work procedures.
\n - Participates in special projects as required or assigned.
\n - Assists Pharmacist and Medication Transition Coordinators with medication delivery and patient care.
\n - Displays teamwork by actively supporting department changes and willingly and proactively assists co-workers. Assures work for each shift is completed prior to departure.
\n - Understanding and compliance with handling procedures of all controlled substances.
\n - Inspects medications in assigned areas (i.e. prescription and front-end). Removes expired products and completes documentation.
\n - Assists in the creation, handling, and maintenance of a variety of pharmacy records to promote efficient operation of the pharmacy and assure regulatory compliance.
\n - Assists in proper inventory maintenance of drugs and supplies ordered and stored by the pharmacy.

\n - Employment experience required (one of the following is required):\n
\n - Previous pharmacy technician experience and certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
\n - Bachelors degree and certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).\n
\n - Successfully completes all assigned annual competencies.
\n

\n \n - Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) obtained and maintained including required continuing education credits.
\n - Prior retail pharmacy experience preferred. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
\n - Valid Pennsylvania Drivers License required for Retail Pharmacy Technicians at UPMC Hanover.
