Job Description

Title: Band Director

Qualifications: Any such qualifications as deemed necessary by the Board to fulfill the duties of the job and as required by the State of Mississippi Department of Education.

Reports to: High School Principal

The basic role of the band director is to provide leadership to the overall band program, as well as to manage the details necessary for a successful day to day program.

The management role of the band director may be the most varied of all school teacher's roles. The task of scheduling, procuring and expending funds, managing personnel, etc., combined with the constant interruptions characterized by the job tasks dictate that the band director possess a high degree of organizational skills.

The position of the band director Is of paramount importance in ensuring that the activities are coordinated with the regular school curriculum and In providing a well-rounded and meaningful educational experience.

Goals and Objectives:

Goal 1: The band director will establish a band program that ensures a cooperative, supportive and participative environment for all students, coaches, faculty and community.

Objectives:

A: Establish open lines of communications with assistants through regular meetings with assistants and selected school and band parent organization.

B: Develop a procedure for confidential discussions of problems and possible solutions

C: Inform parents and band members of requirements, expectations, and benefits of participation.

Goal 2: The band director wlll be visionary and innovative and will create both short and long range goals for the band in cooperation with the students, parents and community.

Objectives:

A: Keep abreast of current trends and research regarding all areas of music.

B: Assess needs of the band program to Identify and prioritize school and community expectations. C: Develop plans which address assessed needs and evaluate progress and /or outcome.

Goal 3: The school band director will provide leadership that Is pro-active and positive. The leadership will place emphasis on the mental, physical and social benefits of the band program to the student and parents.

Objectives:

A: Provide information to staff to utilize positive reinforcement of self esteem of all students.

B: Anticipate problems and difficult situations and strive to resolve them by developing a written plan of action to address them.

C: Encourage moral and positive social behavior by students.

Goal 4: The band director will perform and be accountable for managerial functions. Objectives:

A: Devise and prepare a plan for facility assessment, maintenance and improvement.

B: Coordinate with other administrators regarding the qualifications, expectations, job descriptions, hiring and evaluation of band personnel.

C: Provide a plan to conduct safety checks on all facilities, equipment and teaching techniques.

Goal 5: The band director along with assistants will provide a band program for students that will promote good sportsmanship and citizenship.

Objectives:

A: Develop and implement a band student code of conduct.

B: Ensure that requirements for participation show high expectations for good citizenship. C: Emphasize the need to demonstrate good sportsmanship and social behavior.

Goal 6: The band director will be responsible for ensuring that all policies and rules of the Band Association, the Mississippi High school Activities Association, the Board of Education and the school administration are updated and adhered to.

Objectives:

A: Inform assistants of rules and regulations pertaining to conduct of band program; i.e. hand book, in-service program and updates ensuring they are understood.

B: Develop a written procedure to notify parents and students of rules and regulations that apply to participation.

C: Keep abreast of changes and modifications to existing rules and regulations and communicate the changes to all participants, personnel, parents, and students.

D: Enforce rules/regulations with established actions/penalties that are clearly stated and provided to parents, students and assistants. Nettleton School District
